Italian World Champion Faces Doping Ban

Vincenzo Abbagnale, former world champion and son of Giuseppe Abbagnale, faces a spell on the sidelines after missing three surprise doping tests.

Abbagnale senior, who is currently president of the Italian rowing federation, says that his son could incur up to a two year suspension, which would force him out of the upcoming Rio Olympic Games.  Vincenzo Abbagnale is set to stroke Italy’s eight in Rio, but his fate now lies with the Italian anti-coping commission. He won gold in the coxed pair at the 2013 world rowing championships.

“Out of transparency we want to make the announcement. He missed three doping tests and the rules are clear” Giuseppe Abbagnale said.

Giuseppe Abbagnale is a two-time Olympic champion.
